Abstract
54 SUMMARY Cerebrovascular diseases, after cancer and heart disease are in the third place in regard to causes of mortality. Of cerebrovascular diseases, 80-85 % are ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Cardiovasculary system diseases have an important role in the etiology of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Total 208 patients (127 male, 81 female ; mean age : 61) who had been hospitalized at GATA Neurology Department were taken into the study. Carotis Doppler US, 12-derivation standart electrocardiogram, transthoracal echocardiogram (TTE), cerebral CT, cerebral MRI and routine biochemical assays were applied to all the patients. Of patients, 12 had transeusophageal echocardiography (TEE) additionally. Of patients, 142 electrocardiograms (68.7 %), 133 carotis Doppler US (63.9 %), 113 TTE and TEE (54.3) were found pathologic. One hundred sixty-eight patients (80.7 %) suffered hypertension of these 168, 43 had left ventricular hypertrophy, 149 (71.6 %) had heart disease. Of patients with heart disease 118 (79.1 %) had hypertension, 98 (47.1 %) had atherosclerosis and 87 (41.8 %) had diabetes mellitus. As a result, routine TTE, electrocardiogram, carotis Doppler US and if necessery TEE in all patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease especially in the young ones and multifactorial approaches to the risk factors of ischemic cerebrovascular disease were thought to be effective in the prevention of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. 54 SUMMARY Cerebrovascular diseases, after cancer and heart disease are in the third place in regard to causes of mortality.
