Abstract
The organic bond between man and the environment plays a significant role indetermining one's view of the world. In the historical process of mankind, it has beenwitnessed that this point of view has manifested itself most effectively througharchitecture and art. In this context, when we look at mountainous Eastern Anatolia, possibly the only political formation that has transcended the functionality of basic livingis the Urartians. They created different productions and have witnessed a developmentcourse regarding technique and aesthetics. Undoubtedly, the factor triggering this processis the emergence of a politically centralized social structure with a cluster of people livingin principalities. Changes in socio-cultural and socio-economic levels must haveprompted this process. The Urartians have built dozens of cities and castles whose main building materialwas stone in a great range of areas –Sevan and Lake Urmia Basins are also included inthis broad expression– where the Lake Van Basin forms the center, revealing the firstmonumental architectural examples of the plateau. Not only in the structures that attractattention with their ostentation and size, but also in the artistic sense, they used stoneextensively in specific elements of Urartian culture. In this respect, it is seen that theperiod of Rusa, son of Argişti, is noteworthy in which the understanding of art wassophisticated based on stone workmanship. Ayanis had privileged importance as the onlysettlement where all stone-based elements can be seen together in these cities built byKing Rusa. These items, located in the citadel of the city of Ayanis, also yielded dataexposing the factors in the development of the understanding of stone-based art thatflourished in this last period of the kingdom. It is understood that the social, economic, cultural, and even religious changes that emerged with this period were hidden in the cellawalls of the temple, podiums, or stone containers of the Ayanis citadel. Thesearchitectural and artistic narratives applied by the Urartians in Ayanis reflect their senseof art in many elements of interaction. They are significant in terms of revealing theexistence of stone-based art in the kingdom although they are the product of a lateunderstanding of art. Keywords: Urartu, Ayanis, Stone, Architecture, Art.
