Abstract
The family has a dynamic structure that can show different characteristics and complex structure due to its interaction with social institutions. The family is regarded as an important institution in terms of both the individuals and the social systems due to the functions it fulfills. In general, production relations are one of the main determinants of family structure and organization. Another important factor which determinant family structure is the forced migration or migrations that families carry out voluntarily. Until the 1990s, Kurds mostly live in rural areas due to their traditional forms of production. The Kurds, who characterized as a closed society, are organized under tribal form and in the form of a large family. The structure of the political, social, cultural and economic relations is determined by the tribal structure which is a top organization. According to Kurds, who considered to be traditional, the family is considered and protected as the most important institution. However, due to conflicts between PKK and state in the rural areas of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions in the 1990s, the state began to evacuate rural areas on the grounds of `security` and forced people to migrate to cities. In this context, the study is mainly focuses on Kurdish families who migrate from rural areas in 1990s and settled in various cities of Turkey. The study focuses on the causes of changes in Kurdish forced migrating family structure along with urban life. This study focuses on the changes in the social, economic, cultural and demographic dimensions of the families that had to migrate from different rural settlements to the Van city center in the 1990s. The data of this study were obtained from 30 informants by using qualitative research methods in-depth interview technique. In this study, an in-depth interview technique was used to understand the changes in the forced migrating families who settled in Van, and also the findings were interpreted to reveal how changes differ in terms of generation and sexes.
