dc.description.abstractABSTRACT This is an error analysis carried out to have a knowledge of Turkish students' grammatical and semantic problems with English modal auxiliaries. In Chapter I the purpose and scope of the study are clarified. The hypothesis, the limitations of the study and the assumptions are stated. Chapter II includes information about the three approaches to second or foreign language learners' errors and about problems of learners of English as a second or foreign language with modal auxiliaries. Chapter III deals with the grammatical and semantic properties of modal auxiliaries. In Chapter IV the variables of the study are given. It is stated how the data for the study were obtained. In Chapter V the data are analyzed. The subjects' errors are described and traced to their sources. Chapter VI includes the findings and results reached at the end of the process of _ analyzing the data. In Chapter VII the conclusions are stated. ` Chapter VIII includes insights provided by the study and the implications of the study for the teacher. -xv-en_US
