dc.description.abstractM BSTRACT This study aims at improving the reading skills of the students at Bilkent University Preparatory School by suggesting a procedure for the preparation and implementation of functional reading based on the findings. The emphasis is on use rather than usage. Language is looked at beyond sentence level. The uses of language and its various functions are examined. In Chapter 1, background to the study, the problem, the aim and the limitations of the study are presented. Chapter II gives a comparison of structural and cornmumcative approaches to reading and reviews the models of reading, reading course design, characteristics of functional reading and the present syllabus at Preparatory School of Bilkent University. in Chapter III, data is collected by applying a questionnaire and an interview to both some of the students and teachers at Preparatory School at Bilkent University. Then the results are analysed and interpreted. f Chapter -IV gives the procedures for preparing and teaching functional reading by suggesting an activity-based model and also introduces a sample unit. !n Chapter V, the conclusion of the study is given.en_US
