dc.description.abstractABSTRACT The aim of this study is to suggest a model syllabus design with an integrated approach to reading and writing for the freshmen taking Eng 101/102 courses at Middle East Technical University. Chapter I includes background information to the study related to variables underlying the study. The aim of the study, assumptions concerning the students' background and scope of tin; study in which limitations are described are also included in this chapter. Chapter II includes a brief review of literature concerning an integrated approach in a reading and writing course including a review of articles, textbooks and the present system applied at freshman level at METU. In addition, a model for Eng 1U1 and 102 courses is suggested in this chapter. Chapter III includes the application and preparation of the questionnaire and the structured interview. The analysis and interpretation of the results and implications for the course design are also presented in this chapter. In Chapter IV, the suggested model is introduced with the explanation of the components within the model. Moreover, this chapter includes a sample unit and sample lessons. v'iiChapter V includes the summary of the study as well as some implications lor subsequent studies. The thesis includes three appendices: 1/questionnairo, 2/structured interview, and 3/tables showing the percentages oJ answers to the questionnaire. vxxien_US
