Anahtar Sözcükler: Modern Kadın, Üstünlük, Bağıms'îzlık, Özgürlük, Evlilik. ivACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to extend my gratitude to Assoc. dc.description.abstractABSTRACT SHAW'S VIEW OF EMANCIPATED WOMAN AKYEL, Sibel M. A. in English Literature Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ünal NORMAN July, 1993, 82 pages. Among the English playwright, G. B. Shaw is outstanding owing to the considerable respect and appreciation he displays for the woman characters. In this study, his vision of woman is studied in five of his plays. Pygmalion, Candida, Man and Superman. Mrs. Warren ' s Profession and Major Barbara are primarily used to support the main view that Shaw portrays his heroines as powerful, independent and equal-to-man, which he thinks to be the qualities that help them towards emancipation. Shaw's portrayal of woman is analysed meticulously in connection with the archetypes and feminist views of the modern age. Finally, it is concluded that despite all his good intention and the pedestal he puts woman on, there are still traces of the conventional conditionings of the male perception. However, Shaw's intention of giving a highly honorable and estimable place to woman and his ultimate wish of seeing her in an emancipated status is thought to be highly praiseworthy and revolutionary, when his age is taken into consideration. Key Words: New Woman, Dominance, Independence, Emancipation, Marriage. men_US
