ABSTRACT EXCLUSION AND INCLUSION IN THE BOURGEOIS PUBLIC SPHERE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Sezer, Devrim M. S., Department of Political Science and Public Administration Supervisor: Dr. Cem Deveci January 1998, 133 pages This study aims to question the assumptions concerning the scope of publicity and the idealized notion of the eighteenth century bourgeois public sphere in London and Paris. The idealized portrayal of the eighteenth century public life which was relied on a rhetoric of domestic privacy and a rhetoric of economic privacy legitimized the exclusion of certain areas of social life from the domain of the public sphere. The study founds upon a complete rejection of the idea that there existed a democratic, ideal public sphere in the eighteenth century. On this ground it indicates the peculiarities (the peculiar antidemocratic traits as well as its historically distinguishing characteristics) of this bourgeois public sphere. This is pursued on two levels that are interrelated to each other: historical evidence and philosophical discourse of lmmanuel Kant and Georg Wilhelm Hegel on the iiiscope of publicity, citizenship and civil society. Throughout the study, it is demonstrated how the principles of both exclusion and inclusion had functioned in the eighteenth century public life.
