Bu amaca ulaşmak için birbiri ile bağlantılı üç çalışma yapılmıştır. Bunlardan ilki ABD deki Minnesota Üniversitesi öğrencileri ile ODTÜ öğrencilerinin rehberlik ve psikolojik danışma ihtiyaçlarının karşılaştıran kültürlerarası çalışmadır. İkincisi ODTÜ öğrencilerinin psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik ihtiyaçları ve psikolojik danışma hizmetlerinden beklentilerinin belirlenmesidir. Üçüncüsü ODTÜ de psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmeti veren personelin, verilen hizmetler ve bu hizmetlerin hangi yönlerinin iyileştirilmesi gerektiği konusundaki görüşlerinin belirlenmesidir. Çalışma sonunda, ODTÜ öğrencilerinin belirlenen psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik ihtiyaçları, Psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmetlerinden beklentileri ve ODTÜ de psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmeti veren personelin görüşleri doğrultusunda, ODTÜ de sunulanpsikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmetlerine ilişkin bir model önerisinde bulunulmuştur. Bu çalışmanın örneklemini 310 Minnesota Üniversitesi ve 599 ODTÜ öğrencisi ile ODTÜ de psikolojik danışma hizmeti veren sekiz personel oluşturmuştur Bu çalışmada hem niteliksel hemde niceliksel araştırma metodları kullanılmıştır. Niteliksel araştırmanın verileri Öğrenci İhtiyaçları Anketi ve Öğrenci Beklentileri Bilgi Formu ile, niceliksel veriler ise ODTÜ de psikolojik danışma hizmeti veren personel ile yapılan mülakatlar ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırmada toplanan niteliksel verilerin analizinde açıklayıcı faktör analizi ve çok yönlü varyans analizi teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Niceliksel verilerin analizi ise içerik analizi tekniği kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bu araştırmanın bulguları ODTÜ öğrencilerinin Minnesota öğrencilerinden daha fazla psikolojik danışma ihtiyacı belirttiğini ve ODTÜ öğrencilerinin Psikolojik Danışma ve Rehberlik ihtiyaçlarının cinsiyet, akademik basan, ve yaşa göre değişiklik gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Niceliksel çalışmanın bulguları ise ODTÜ de sunulan psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmetlerinin bir profilini çıkarmış ve şu an sunulan hizmetlerin iyileştirilmesi için ne gibi değişiklikler yapılması gerektiği konusunda bilgi vermiştir. Bu araştırmanın sonuçlan genel olarak, ODTÜ öğrencilerinin psikolojik yardıma ihtiyaçlan olduğunu, bu nedenle ODTÜ'ün de sunulan psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik hizmetlerinin öğrencilerin ihtiyaç ve beklentileri ile, hizmet veren personelin önerileri doğrultusunda yeniden yapılandınlması gerektiğini göstermiştir. ABSTRACT ADVANCEMENT OF A COUNSELING MODEL FOR METU: A NEEDS ASSESSMENT STUDY WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND METU STUDENTS AND METU COUNSELING STAFF Yerin Güneri, Oya Ph.D., Department of Educational Sciences Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gül Aydm February 1999, 213 Pages The main and ultimate purpose of the present study is to propose a counseling center model for METU. In order to reach this aim, three interrelated studies were carried out; first study includes the cross cultural comparison of the counseling needs of university students at University of Minnesota (U of M) and at Middle East Technical University (METU). Second study deals with the identification of counseling needs and expectations of METU students. The third study obtains the perceptions and opinions of METU counseling center staff about the needs of students and a relevant counseling center model for METU. At the end of the study, a relevant counseling model for METU, which was based on the needs and expectations of the students and the suggestions of METU counseling staff, was proposed. The sample of the present study consisted of 310 university students from U of M and 599 students from METU and 8 professional staff of the METU counseling center. In the present study, both qualitative and quantitative research methods iiiwere used. The quantitative data were collected through Student Needs Assessment Survey and Student Needs Expectation Survey. The qualitative data were collected through interviews with the counseling staff. In order to analyze quantitative data, principal component analysis and MANOVA were used. For the qualitative part, data collected through interviews were transcribed and content-analyzed. The comparison of both U of M and METU students counseling needs provided evidence that METU students expressed more counseling needs than did the U of M students. The findings of the study also revealed that counseling needs of METU students do change with respect to sex, GPA and age. The findings of the qualitative part of the study provided a descriptive profile of the METU counseling center model, besides suggesting the necessary changes that will help to improve the current METU counseling services model. Overall, the results of the present study indicated that, in order to meet the counseling needs and expectations of the METU students and to provide ideal services that are suggested by METU counseling staff, METU counseling services need to be consolidated.
