Abstract
The main purpose of the thesis is to prepare a corpus of silver and bronze coins the city had minted within the late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods. By means of chronological, metrological and typological evaluation of data obtained, it is being aimed to make some contribution to the data on the historical, cultural, economic structure of the city. According to the ancient sources, Nysa was founded in the Hellenistic Period and completed its development in the Roman Period. From the 2nd century BCE onwards the city struck bronze coinage in its name. Moreover, Nysa is one of the Asian cities which minted cistophoroi, with various symbols, legends and especially dates. The city had gone on to strike bronze coins and this tradition was maintained until the Gallienus Period, like as the other cities of Asia Minor under the Roman Empire. Reverse types of these coins are variable. These types are especially concerned with the cult of Pluto and Kore in the sanctuary of Acharaca which is three kilometres west of Nysa. In addition, representation of the other deities on the reverses give an idea of other possible cults in the city. The coin finds, which unearthed during the Nysa excavations since 1990, provide us an important information about the circulation of local and foreign coins in the city. Excavation coins varies from the 2nd century BCE to the 14th century CE.
