Abstract
VII UTILISATION OF FLY ASH IN GLASS -CERAMIC PRODUCTION SUMMARY Fly ash is a waste product of coal burned in thermal power plants. Due to the tact that it is dry and is produced in large quantities (an annual production of 15 million tones in Turkey) it is one of the major source for environmental pollution. Therfore, the environmental pollution aspect of the fly ash should be tackled using both economical and reliable mean. In this study, the possibility of using fly ash in glass-ceramic production as a raw material source has been investigated. For this purpose, fly ash obtained from different thermal power plants has been characterized and its suitability to form glass and glass-ceramic articles can be developed from a particular fly ash composition, the next step has been to characterize these using analytical techniques and tests. These are: Chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction, DTA, optical and scanning electron microskopy (SEM) and the microhardness test. The chemical analysis showed that the glass forming fly ash consists of the following oxides: Si02, CaO, MgO, A120:` Fe203, Na20 and K20. The results of the x-ray diffraction analysis of fly ash exhibited the mineral phases: Mullite, quartz, enstatite, hematite and anortite. Following the melting and refining procedure of the fly ash powders at 1400°C DTA was applied to the produced glass samples to determine the nucleation and crystallisation temparatures. Nucleation and crystallisation temparatures were 671°C and 914°C, respectively. Heat treatment processes planned accoding to the DTA were applied to the glass samples placed in a muffle furnace. The glass-ceramic samples were obtained by heating the glass samples at a rate of 10°C/min to 680°C, then keeping the samples at this temperatures for 5, 10 and 15h and raising the temparature to 924°C and keeping the samples at this temparature for 20 minutes. At the end, the crystallised samples were quenched in air or in furnace. The XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline phase was diopside. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations showed the presence of a homogenously dispersed crystal phases. The results of Vickers microhardness test showed that the microhardness increased with the increase in holding time at the nucleation temparature. In overall, results have indicated the possibility of producing glass-ceramic materials from fly ash as a raw material source. VIII
