Abstract
AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF SPINNING PARAMETERS IN PLYFTL 1000 SYSTEM SUMMARY The work described in this thesis has concentrated on determining the influence of various parameters such as yarn count, twisting nozzle construction, assembly and twisting nozzle pressures and material type on the properties of two ply.air-jet spun yarns, that were produced by spin-assembly-winder concept on PLYfiL system and on determining the role of those properties on obtaining optimum two ply air jet spun yarn characteristics and production performance. In PLYfiL system in which the yarns were produced, there are two successive nozzles. The first nozzle is the assembly nozzle in which the fibres are assembled and the second is the twisting nozzle in which the wrapper fibres are placed around the core fibres. Ne 60/2 and Ne 30/2 yarns from 100% Lyocell, 100% cotton and Ne 60/2 yarns from 50/50 polyester/cotton blend were produced with varying assembly and twisting nozzle pressures and twisting nozzle constructions. 50/50 polyester/cotton blended yarns could not have been produced with the yarn count Ne 30/2 due to lack of sufficient material. During the production of the yarns, two sets of experiments were carried out, one by fixing the twisting nozzle pressure at 3.5 bar and varying the assembly nozzle pressure at 4 levels (1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5) and the other by fixing the assembly nozzle pressure at 2 bar and varying the twisting nozzle pressure at 4 levels (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0). Four different types of twisting nozzles were employed. These nozzles were coded as I, H, III and IV and they were ranked in the order of I<II<1H<IV according to the dimensions of nozzle channels through which the yarns pass. Spinning parameters used for the production of two-ply air-jet spun yarns are seen in Table 1. Table 1. Spinning parameters used for the production of air-jet yarns By the use of these process variables, a total of 140 yarn samples were produced, which were ply-twisted on a two-for-one twister accordingly. General properties of the yarns, namely, tenacity, extension, hairiness and irregularity xinproperties were tested for each yarn sample before and after twisting and the influence of process variables on the physical properties were evaluated. The results obtained revealed that the changes in the assembly nozzle pressure influenced the tenacity and extension of untwisted yarns and those properties of the yarns increased with the increase in the assembly nozzle pressure until 3 bar. The increase of assembly nozzle pressure until 3.0 bar had a significant effect on the tenacity of untwisted yarns, where further increase of the pressure from 3.0 to 3.5 bar proves not to be significant at 95% level of confidence. It can be said that hairiness and irregularity of the untwisted yarns tended to decrease as the assembly nozzle pressure increased. On the other hand, the tenacity and the extension properties of the untwisted yarns could be considered insensitive to the changes in the twisting nozzle pressure for all blend types and yarn counts as statistical analysis yielded no significant interaction between the twisting nozzle pressure and tenacity and extension of untwisted yarns at 99% level of confidence. Hairiness of the untwisted yarns showed a decreasing and irregularity showed an increasing trend when the twisting nozzle pressure was increased. It was observed that Nozzle I always yielded the best tenacity, extension, hairiness and irregularity results for untwisted yarns for all assembly and twisting nozzle pressures. For a given assembly and twisting nozzle pressure, the tenacity and extension of the untwisted yarns depended on the yarn count and was lower for coarse count yarns. Coefficient of variation of tenacity and extension values for untwisted yarns were very high and the variation in the tenacity and extension values of coarser yarns were higher than the variation in those properties of finer yarns. Coarser yarns were more hairy than finer ones, where irregularity of finer yarns were greater than that of coarser yarns. Assembly nozzle pressure had no significant effect on extension of twisted yarns, where change in the tenacity properties of the twisted yarns with the assembly nozzle pressure displayed a decreasing trend. However, the improvement in tenacity and extension of weaker untwisted yarns was more than that for stronger untwisted yarns. In other words, increase in the tenacity and extension values of the yarns produced at lower assembly nozzle pressure was higher than the increase in those values of yarns produced at higher assembly nozzle pressures. Improvement in the tenacity and extension values of yarns produced with Nozzle I was also lower than the improvement of those values of other yarns produced with Nozzle n, m and IV. Variation in the hairiness and irregularity of the twisted yarns was parallel to the variation performed by untwisted yarns. After twisting, the best hairiness and irregularity values were still governed by Nozzle I most of the times, where highest tenacity and extension values did not belong to Nozzle I. The change in the tenacity and extension of twisted yarns showed a downward trend with the increase in the twisting nozzle pressure. The effect of the increase in twisting nozzle pressure on the chances in tenacity and extension values of twisted yarns was significant at 99% confidence level. Change in the hairiness and irregularity of the twisted yarns produced with various twisting nozzle pressures was also parallel to the change performed by untwisted yarns. XIVCoarser twisted yarns were more strong and hairy and had higher extension than finer yarns, where irregularity of finer twisted yarns was greater than the irregularity of coarser ones. Coefficient of variation of tenacity and extension for coarser twisted yarns were lower than those values of finer yarns. Physical properties of the yarns altered after they had been given twist. A comparison of the properties of the twisted and untwisted yarns revealed that tenacity and extension of twisted yarns surpassed those values of untwisted yarns, where hairiness and yarn irregularity of the untwisted yarns were greater than those properties of twisted ones for all nozzle and blend types. For a detailed study of the yarn appearance, yarns produced with an assembly nozzle pressure of 2 bar and twisting nozzle pressure of 2.5 bar were examined under microscope. 2.0/2.5 pressure combination was chosen as it gave the optimum tenacity values, which is considered the most important criterion for the end-product. Microscopic investigation showed that the yarns basically consisted of wrapped and unwrapped lengths and yarn structure was classified into 4 classes as follows: Class A: Parallel fibres that lie in the core of the yarn are wrapped tightly and uniformly with almost regular intervals by the wrapper fibres. The fibres in the core have no twist. Class B: Parallel fibres in the core are wrapped randomly and generally loosely by wrapper fibres, which are sometimes in singular state and sometimes in groups. The appearance of the yarn is not uniform. Class C: In these parts of the yarn, fibres are so entangled that they look like knots. Class D: This class is formed by parallel fibres that have no wraps. Proportion and average length of the structural classes were determined for Ne 60/2 yarns and effects of lengths and proportion of each class on tenacity and extension of both untwisted and twisted yarns were studied. Furthermore, knit fabric samples were produced from Ne 60/2 air jet spun yarns that were produced with 2.0/2.5 pressure combination in order to study the performance of two ply jet spun yarns in the fine count range. Besides air jet spun yarns, ring spun yarns from Lyocell fibres with a yarn count of Ne 60/2 and Ne 30/2 were also produced and Ne 60/2 ring spun yarns were knitted in order to compare pilling, abrasion properties and bursting strength of fabrics from both types of yarns, as well as to compare the properties of two-ply air jet and ring spun yarns. By the evaluation of the results, influence of the processing parameters on obtaining optimum two-ply air jet spun yarn characteristics and performances were determined. XV
