Abstract
Kuruçeşme mahallesi, İstanbul'a, Boğaziçi'ne ve kendine has özellikleri yansıtır. IX There is a continuous interaction between people and the places where they are living. Related with the physical, social and cultural features of place, there exist different types of relationships within diverse places. While affected by man, the environment is also reshaped with the person's demands. Both the built environment and the social involvement enable the community life and a bonding to be formed with the residential environments. People develop attachments to their neighborhoods, where they share familiar, communal or cultural bonds with their neighbors generating it to become the extension of the identity of 'self. The community attachment of the individual is influenced by human and environment originated factors. Istanbul, as the capital of many empires, is an unrivaled city that has long been identified with its unique waterway. First the nature calls people. Then, replying, people add new values to the nature by modifying it. There are cases in which this mutual encouragement contribute to that place resulting it to be significant in human history. The Bosphorus, such a place, is unique according to the harmony within water and earth, man and nature. The Bosphorus, at the beginning was used as a settlement only used in summers. Later on also, it could have no chance to become a densely used settlement, mostly because of the difficulties of transportation and its specific, hard topography. At the times of Ottomans, along whole coast, it was a bounded, linear settlement Kuruçeşme, a village on the Bosphorus, reflects the particular characteristics of both the Bosphorus and the city of Istanbul, and itself as well. The individuals enjoy the collective belonging by realizing the fertility of the place and the communal attachment by accepting the existence of shared values prolonging from the past. Its proximity to the city center, legendary, marvelous natural and physical features and the 'community1 character makes it to become an attraction and gravity point. Today, Kuruçeşme is a heterogeneous settlement, comprised of various cultures, religions, languages, origins, ages, economical status, education levels and cultural backgrounds. It has a complex physical texture comprised of the existing patterns of traditional houses, apartment blocks, luxurious apartment groups and squatter settlements with no clear distinctions. Accommodating different cultural and social layers is the most outstanding, discriminating feature of Kuruçeşme which can explicitly be read from physical, social and cultural environments. This study aims to investigate the concept of community attachment by concentrating on the man-environment interaction, to explore the physical and social environment characteristics and their relationships with the community attachment concept, to find out the levels of attachments among the different groups ofresidents, their differences and transformations in the course of time and the affecting factors. The study first deals with the concepts and processes of people and their relations with the environment, focusing and investigating the neighborhood, community life and the physical environment. Later, profoundly, the study reviews the research about the place and community attachment, concentrating on formation and maintenance processes, affecting factors, and inseparable, mutually defining qualities, types, dimensions and actors. Then linking with the Bosphorus, Kuruçeşme is explored in different aspects by comparing the case of today with the past. Consequently, in the scope of this theoretical frame, in order to depict the community attachment within the settlement a case study is conducted. XI
