Abstract
In this thesis inverse scattering problems on dielectric objects embedded in a layered medium is considered. Detection and reconstruction of inaccessible objects embedded in the second layer of a three planarly layered medium is studied.First forward scattering problem is considered. Green function for three planarly layered medium is represented and scattered field is defined over a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Then the obtained scattered field is compared with the results of the classical solution of ?scattering from a dielectric cylinder? problem in order to show its consistency.Second the embedded objects are detected by using the surface impedance characteristic of the first interface which is defined for standard impedance boundary condition (SIBC).Finally the embedded objects are reconstructed on reconstruction domains which are selected by the guidance of the information of the surface impedance characteristic. Then the data and object equations defined for the scattered field are solved for object function by applying Newton Method iteratively. Because of the nonlinear character of the problem some kind of regularization has to be applied to the system. Tikhonov regularization is applied to the system for this purpose. The effects of parameters used in reconstruction are studied and reported as quantitative results.Newton Method can be effectively used in reconstruction of embedded objects which have smaller sizes than the operating wavelength.
