Abstract
Soil liquefaction is phenomenon of temporary loss of shear in saturated cohesionlesssoils under influence of vibrations caused by earthquakes. Due to complexity ofliquefaction problems, such as nonlinearity of responses, sudden phase transition fromsolid to liquid behavior, material instability, interaction and relative movement betweenporous soil skeleton and interstitial water, limitations on experimental and numericaltechniques, material model formulation and so on reliable and accurate predictivemethods have to be developed. The extensive loss of lives and civil infrastructure systemcaused by liquefaction emphasize the need for strong and reliable methods forevaluating the liquefaction potential of sites. For this reason, conventional methods forevaluating liquefaction potential are based on correlating data from soil StandardPenetration Test (SPT) with a parameter that represents seismic loading on soil duringan earthquake. This study aims to explore the best model by comparing Finite differencemodel and neural network model for prediction of liquefaction potential for chosen casestudy area. These models use SPT data for training and testing. Various models areexamined and model with highest success rate is presented. Specific objectives ofresearch are to develop finite difference model in 3D to predict liquefaction potential ofsite, to develop neural network model to predict liquefaction potential, to enhanceperformance of artificial neural network model of liquefaction analysis, to comparesimplified methods results with finite difference method based model results and neuralnetwork algorithm based model results, to compare 1D, 2D and 3D finite differencemethod based model results and to calculate the importance of the earthquakemagnitude by comparing the other parameters that affect liquefaction potential of sites. As a summary, results obtained by two proposed models demonstrate potentialliquefaction probability and encourage use of this application for forecasting studies.
