Abstract
The ultimate strength of stiffened ship panels is calculated by non-linear Finite Element Method (FEM), and collapse behavior of the panels is investigated in detail. An analytical formula, based on Principle of Minimum Potential Energy, is derived to evaluate the overall buckling strength of stiffened panels. Approximate methods from the literature to estimate the ultimate strength of panels are examined; one of them, namely Fujikubo and Yanagihara (FY) method, is modified for improving the accuracy of FY method. Finally but more importantly, a new method, based on Elastic Large Deflection Analysis, is developed to evaluate the ultimate strength of stiffened panels. The new method is compared with the other methods from the literature. The accuracy and efficiency of the present method is verified.
