Abstract
Crime is an important source and news topic for the media. However, crime news has long been an information priority. In the late 1880s, mass media detected that crime and tragedy has a waste circulation. The vast majority of the society relies on the mass media for their information about crime. In order to understand the role of forensic sciences in the media, one has to first acknowledge this enormous mechanism that has the power to influence masses. Mass media, at this point, can be influential in shaping opinions and attitudes about crime. Meanwhile, the educative role of the media on the society shouldn?t be ignored. The media provide information about events that are significant to the society, and in one sense paint a portrait of society. However, it is a limited picture because of the selection decisions that are made based on the news formulation. From this point of view, media?s approach to the news in the forensic sciences field and its news making system are very important process. This study examined 1718 published news in 15 Turkish newspapers between 01 January 2008 and 01 August 2009. The study aims to observe the news making of ?forensics?, to investigate and to determine the errors and the ethical-legal problems of this specialized domain news making. These news were examined according to 52 parameters such as news? published page, news? source, use of adjectives/adverbs, text?s overall meaning, and presence/absence of error. As a result, it?s been observed that media?s attention to forensic sciences is parallel to ?popular? events and the error?s percentage is low in this type of news. It?s been also found that the news that have forensic sciences as subject use significantly high percentage of adjectives/adverbs and negative qualification judgment but have low percentage of error. It?s been also noted that the news have significantly low percentage of error when the news? source is a news agency. The error percentage was found significantly high when the news were about clinical procedure autopsy and organizational structure of The Council of Forensic Medicine. Concurrently the high percentage of legal process error in the news state expressly that the media workers should be informed about basic legal and scientific processes.
