Abstract
Evaporation is one of the simple events in nature and can be observed in many areas of our daily life. When a droplet evaporated on a substrate, the dissolved molecules or the dispersed particles in the drop remain on the substrate after evaporation. The formation of stains or rings which appeared on the surface after evaporation is a dynamic process and the particles dispersed in the drop are moved to the contact line during evaporation. Stain and ring formation on a substrate after evaporation of droplet has become a commonly used technique in recent years, for the formation of DNA/RNA microarrays, micro-lenses and electronic devices which are produced by ink-jet printing method. The aim of this study is to control the size and morphology of the stains after the complete drop evaporation. Within this framework; droplets with 2 ml volume formed by a micropipette from the dispersions having different graphite and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration on the surfaces with different surface free energy values, were evaporated and the stains which formed after the drop evaporation were examined. All tests were conducted under constant relative humidity using hygrostat solutions in a closed chamber. It was found experimentally that the control of geometrical diameter of the stains after evaporation is possible depending on the surface free energy of the substrates, the graphite concentration and SDS concentration factors. A linear relationship was found between the stain diameter and surface free energy and contact angle hysteresis of the substrates.
