Abstract
-186- S UM M A R Y The social and economical importance of peasantry in underdeveloped societies have boon drawing an increasing in terest in recent years. Along these lines, the transformation process of the rural sector, its socio-economical structure and problems related to peasantry have been the focus of increasing studies in this field. Based on how the rural societies go through trails formu t ion under the conditions of capitalist economy and to whaL degree they become3 dependent on capitalism, these studies develop certain typologies for peasantry. The major criteria in these typologies appear to be Lhe differences in the slructure of production with respect to ma rket re la t ions. Within this context, how the rural transformation is actualized under the conditions of capitalism and how the differentiation of peasant.community 'structure takes place during the process of rural development constitute the proble matic of this study. While the subject of this thesis is determined as: `Differentiation in the process of market oriented production and rural development in Sivaö-Kangal regidn: A case study.` Consequently, a comparative study on two villages from the chosen area of study, Sivas-Kangal, has been undertaken. One of the villages studi-ed is Kocakurt-187- village where there is abundance of `small producers who are able to accumulate` and the other is Kirkpmar village where `landlordship` with Capitalistic characteristics is seen. The means of transformation under capitalist conditions have been analyzed in these two villages, Tn the area studied, i;t has been seen that these two villages, despite their geographical proximity have gone through totally different processes of transformation. The transformation tendencies of these villages also determine the transformations of respective peasant families. Conse quently, the findings of this study verify the appropriateness of evaluation and analysis at the level of peasant community. In fact, it is seen that the intorcommuni ty differences surpass in inequality those of intracommunity. Micro-level analyses on rural structure can further contribute to the study of the lines along which transforma tion occurs, as well -as differences in the process of market oriented production, changes in land structure and socio- oconoinieal developments, Similar studies on this subject and their follow ups with intervals will contribute' to, our under- standing of the rural structure in Turkey and create new ave nues for discussion.
