Abstract

Kişinin yaşadığı çevreyi anlamlandırma ve ona kök salma biçimi olan mesken tutma, fiziksel ve düşünsel karşılığını, inşa ederek sığındığı bir kabuk olan evde bulur. İnsanlığın geçirdiği evrime paralel olarak çeşitli disiplinlerdeki kavramsal uzantılarıyla en çok ele alınan konulardan biri olan ev, bu anlamda tez çalışmasının ana kavramını oluşturur. Sigmund Freud'un Almanca `heimlich` kelimesinin çift yönlü anlamlandırılmasından yola çıkarak psikanaliz alanında geniş çaplı ele aldığı; tanıdık olanın bastırılarak ve ötekileştirilerek zihinsel olarak yabancılaşmasını ifade eden `tekinsiz (unheimlich)` terimi ise bu tezin ana iskeletini oluşturan bir diğer kavramdır. Onun felsefe, mimarlık, sanat gibi farklı disiplinlere uzanan yankılamaları sonucu ev kavramı tekrar ele alınır. Bu doğrultuda, Jacques Derrida'nın `hayalet metaforu` etrafında şekillenen tartışmalar; Mark Wigley'in mekânsal bağlamda onun izini sürerek ev ile ilişkilendirmesi ve Nermin Saybaşılı'nın `sınır kavramı, yerinden edilme, göç, sınır yerleşimleri` gibi eşikte olma deneyimi üzerinden yaptığı okumalar yol gösterici olur. On sekizinci yüzyıl modernleşme hareketi sonrası hayatın birçok alanında yaşanan anlam değişimi kamusal alanları olduğu kadar özel alanları da etkiler. Dolayısıyla, ev de bu değişimden payını alır. Söz konusu tez çalışması, evin modernleşmeden bugüne yaşanan toplumsal dönüşümlere paralel olarak değişen anlamı ve mekânı üzerinde odaklanarak tekinsiz kavramı ile ilişkilendirir, çağdaş sanattaki yansımalarına bakar ve eve dair gerçekleştirilen çalışmalar ile yeni bir anlam ve deneyim önerir.

Dwelling, the means for people to make sense of and plant their roots in the environment in which they reside, finds its physical and intellectual counterpart in house, a shell that constructs and where it takes refuge. The house, with its many extensions in various disciplines parallel to the evolution of mankind, is a subject often covered in academia. It comprises the key concept of this thesis.The other concept that forms the main framework of this thesis `the uncanny (unheimlich),` which expresses the way that what is familiar may be alienated through suppression and marginalization. The term -a play on the German word `heimlich`-was invented by Sigmund Freud, who studied the subject extensively in his field of psychoanalysis. Through the reverberations of his work in different disciplines like philosophy, architecture and art, the notion of the house is re-examined. In this regard, discussions around Jacques Derrida's `metaphor of the ghost,` Mark Wigley's following in his footsteps and associating the metaphor with houses, and Nermin Saybaşılı's studies through the experience of liminality, such as `the concept of borders, displacement, migration, border settlements` are instructive.The semantic changes that arose in many areas of life after the eighteenth century attempts at modernization affect private spaces as much as they do public spaces. Therefore, the house is also influenced by these changes. This thesis focuses on the changing meanings of the house parallel to societal changes from modernization to our current day, and its space, and associates it to the concept of the uncanny; it reviews its implications in contemporary art and offers new a meaning and a new experience through studies directed towards the house.
