dc.description.abstractABSTRACT This thesis aims to. s-tat^. the needs of the students learning English at Gazi University, in service courses, and to suggest an appropriate approach to teaching reading. The background to the study, the problem, and the purpose and aim of the study are given in the first chapter. The/ second chapter attempts to define who the students are and to find the needs of Gazi University students in service courses. It also includes some applied linguists' ideas about reading. The importance of the text, the teacher, and the reader in reading are given and some suggestions are made in the third chapter. Reading for different purposes and again some suggestions are given in the last chapter. The conclusion chapter is followed by appendices. The first appendix consists of the tables of contents of the textbooks which are in' use in service courses at Gazi University. The other appendices have supplementary exercises. iiien_US
