Y Two of the most important raw metarials for basketwork weaving are willow (Salix L.) and cane (Arundo donax L.), both of which are plentiful in Turkey, and are cheap and easy to grow. The purpose of this research is to define the different ways in which they can be used and tested for quality. The length and width of the willow branches and cane must meet certain specifications. They will be tested for quality in their natural state and after having been tested with 5 % NaOH and 10 % NaOH will be varnished and painted. The testing will be carried out by Universal Material Testing Machines. The products made form these materials will be displayed in the trading centres in Ankara and will be duly examined and their quality inspected. The average length of the willow branches will be 205.30 cm and the averege width will be 46.13 mm at the base and 31.07 mm at the tip. The cane should be 95.11 cm in length and 19.82 11 ih width, on average, to make it suitable for weaving. During the testing for resistance, it was fourd that the base part of willow branches was best, followed by the middle sections of the willow branches, thes the cane, Whes 5 % NaOH and 10 % NaOH was used, it was found that there was a drop in the quality of resis tance. Resistance to shrinking was highest in cane but the stretch ing was highest in willow. Cane was found to be more suitable for pressing, followed by the base then the middle parts of willow. How ever, it was observed that there was a considerable loss of thisquality when the cane was painted. When tested for the ability to retain its shape, willow was found to be the most suitable with its base part being the most re sistant to mis-Shaping. When 5 % NaOH was used, there was a fall in the level of resistance. Willow branctes and to a lesser extent, came, can both be used to produce a variety of goods such as baskets, car and cloth ing accessories, furniture and other household items and childrens' toys. Goods made from willow and cane are easy to carry and clean and are hard-wearing, qualities which make them popular and widely used. Weaving as a hobby is both useful and entertaining and can be undertaken by people of all types and ages, thus providing them with an interesting way of spending their spare time.
