The study and teaching of stream of consciousness technique in Virginia Woolf`s three novels: Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves

Abstract

This thesis is composed of two main parts based on the study of a literary technique, the stream of consciousness in Virginia Woolf's three novels Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves.In the Introduction, Virginia Woolf's literary career and her significant role in English Literature are analyzed accompanied by critics. In this part, the stream of consciousness technique is also presented.In the Development part of the thesis entitled In the Corridors of the Mind, each of the novels is analyzed in a thematical framework including the literary style of the writer.In the Teaching part, the teaching of the stream of consciousness technique using Woolf's three novels is provided. The anticipated lesson plans are presented theoretically, which appears to be a beneficial part to shed light on the teaching of such a challenging literary technique.In the Conclusion, having elaborated on Woolf's three novels, we have come up with the points related to her use of stream of consciousness technique. Virginia Woolf shapes this technique according to her own style. Studying her three main novels here, it is possible to claim that her vocabulary choice, the sense of rhythm and colour accompanied by her poetic style makes Virginia Woolf one of the best writers of English Literature using the stream of consciousness technique.

Virginia Woolf?un Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves adlı üç romanı kullanılarak bir edebiyat akımı olan bilinç akışı tekniğinin incelenmesi ve öğretilmesini ele alan bu tez dört bölümden oluşmaktadır.Giriş bölümünde Virginia Woolf?un kariyeri ve İngiliz Edebiyatı?ndaki önemli yeri kritiklerin de görüşlerine yer verilerek anlatılmıştır. Bu bölümde ayrıca bilinç akışı tekniği hakkında bilgide verilmektedir.Zihnin Koridorlarında olarak isimlendirdiğimiz Gelişme bölümünde, Woolf?un bu teze konu olan üç kitabı, tematik olarak incelenmiş ve ayrıca kullanılan tekniğin özellikleriyle ilişkilendirilerek sunulmuştur.Tezin Öğretim bölümünde Virginia Woolf?un adı belirtilen üç romanını kullanarak bilinç akışı tekniğinin öğretilmesi ele alınmıştır. Bu bölümde sadece öngörülmüş olan ders planları teorik olarak hazırlanmıştır. Öngörülmüş olan bu ders planlarının böyle zor bir anlatım tekniğinin öğretilmesine ışık tutacağı umulmaktadır.Sonuç bölümünde, Virginia Woolf?un bu üç ana romanı üzerinde durularak O?nun bilinç akışı tekniğinin kullanılmasına farklı bir tarz getirdiği sonucuna vardık. Woolf bu tekniği kendi tarzına göre şekillendirmiştir. Kelime seçimi, ritm duygusu, şiirsel bir tat eşliğinde kullandığı renkler bilinç akışı tekniğini etkilemiştir. Sonuç olarak, bud a Virginia Woolf?u İngiliz Edebiyatı?nda bilinç akışı tekniğini kullanan en iyi yazarlardan biri haline getirmiştir.
