Abstract
SUMMARY In this study, the effects of anthropogenic nutrients inputs into the sea together with environmental parameters such as light and temperature on the formation of microalgea growth (primary production) have been studied. The amount of microalgae growth, specific growth rate and doubling day have been determined and related to light and water temperature in addition of nitrogeneous, phosphorus and nitrogeneous + phosphorous compounds. The study was conducted in August-September 1990 (outdoor) and January - February 1991 (both outdoor and laboratory conditions). It was seen that the increases in the amount of growth and growth rate depend on initial nutrient concentrations and initial nitrogen/phosphorus ratio when single and double nutrients are added. For this reason, the Monod equation which depends on initial nutrient concentration was used. Amprical mathematical equations and kinetic coefficients for addition of single and double nutrients were determined. Primary production rates have been calculated using the experimental results and the relationship between light intensity and depth. Avarage primary production values were found to be 181 mgC/m2/hour for August-September 1990 and 7.5 mgC/m2/hour for January-February 1991. It is planned that the wastewater treatment plant in İzmir will consist of anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds. Therefore, nitrogen, phosphorus algae concentrations and primary production were calculated taking into account the discharge flowrate in the year 2000. Thus, future nitrogen, phosphorus and algae concentrations were calculated for hypotheses in which microalge continue their life in the sea and for those where the microalgae do not continue their life in the sea. For the summer and winter periods graphs were plotted for using variable nitrogen, constant phosphorus concentrations against growth rate. Additional graphs which show primary production were obtained by using variable nitrogen, constant phosphorus and constant volatile suspended matter. It was seen that the primary production are very high when compared to measured values in some coastal areas. Therefore, it is concluded that the treated wastewater discharge into the sea, may cause problems especially in the summer periods. -ix-
