Abstract
ıı ABSTRACT In this thesis processes for fabricating aluminum based composites containing particulate non-metals, their microstructure, their friction and wear behavior and their mechanical properties are described. Composites of 2024, 1070 and A 413 aluminum alloy containing 5 to 15 wt. % of SiC particulates in the size range 1 to 63 jum were prepared. All these materials were produced using the conventional foundry process. There are many microstructural variables such as ageing condition of the matrix alloy, the material used as reinforcement, the volume fraction and the size of particles, all these may effect the mechanical and tribological properties of the composite. The aim of this work is to examine the effects of some of these variables on the room temperature properties. The results of the work shows that, the addition of SiC to aluminum alloys increases hardness, wear resistance and elastic modulus, and reduces the coefficient of friction and elongation.
