Abstract
ABSTRACT A Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is a fill-draw type conventional activated sludge system. In recent years, they have been widely used to treat industrial wastewaters. In this study, treatability of brewery wastewater by using SBR has been investigated. This study has been carried out in three steps. In the first step, easily biodegradable synthetic wastewater by using glucose solution has been used in order to investigate the performance of the SBR. It has been found that Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), and Total Phosphorous (TP) removal efficiencies were up to 98 %, 78 %, and 20 %, respectively. In the second step, by using beer as carbon source synthetic wastewater were prepared. Investigations showed that 8-h operation cycle was not long enough to treat this wastewater. For this reason, 12-h operation cycle was chosen and two different length of phases, 7 hours aeration, and 5 hours aeration, were applied. Up to 96 % COD, 65 % TKN and 40 % TP reductions were obtained at F/M ratios of 0.68 in 12-h operation with 7-h aeration. The results of the following experiments also showed similar treatment pattern. In the third step, preliminary treatment of high strength brewery wastewater was investigated. Up to 60 % COD, and 37 % TP reductions were achieved at high F/M ratios (i.e. up to 3.29). Evaluation of experimental results has been shown that the rate of COD removal is first order reaction. -i-
