Abstract
V ABSTRACT In this work, an investigation was carried out to determine the effect of hot forging on the mechanical properties and wear behaviour of Al-5%Si-0.2%Mg (A1Sİ5) matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles of 9, 13, 17, and 22 vol %. For this purpose, the compocast ingots were forged in two steps at 500 °C. The forged composites were subjected to microstructural analysis, density measurements, hardness, tensile and dry sliding wear tests at different loads. The porosity observed in the as-cast samples were found to be mostly eliminated, and density of the composites were increased. It was found that increasing amount of SiC increased hardness, but decreased it after hot forging. The elastic modulus was found to be strongly affected by the reinforcement content, and the highest values of the elastic modulus (106 GPa) was found in the composite with 22 vol.% SiC particles. The tensile elongation, 0.2 proof stress and tensile strength systematically increased after applied forging in comparison to the as-cast samples, but these properties tend to vary with the amount of plastic deformation. After applying the forging, the most significant improvement on mechanical properties was tensile elongation, which was found to be higher than that of as cast composites. The composites exhibited better wear resistance than the unreinforced alloy up to a load of 5.28 N, beyond this load, the composites showed a marked decrease in wear resistance.
