Abstract
IV ABSTRACT Aluminium alloy wheels can be used under very different environmental conditions and climates. Therefore, they may be exposed to very different working temperatures. The aim of this work is the observation of the effect of high and low working temperatures on mechanical behaviour of the wheel material. The material studied is AlSil lMg alloy modified with strontium. In this study, the mechanical behaviour of AlSillMgSr alloy used as aluminium wheel alloy has been investigated at 8 different temperatures between 200 °C and -50 °C, the temperatures being ; 200 °C, 150 °C, 100 °C, 50 °C, room temperature, 0 °C, -20 °C, -50 °C. Firstly, the mechanical properties of the specimens which were held 30 minutes at selected temperatures have been investigated separately at these temperatures. Then, the mechanical behaviour has been observed at 2 different temperatures (150 °C, 0 °C) in the same conditions using a holding time of 60 minutes. Thus, the mechanical properties at different temperatures and in addition the effect of holding time at working temperature on properties have been investigated. Finally, Charpy V-notch impact test has been applied at four different temperatures (Room temperature, -20 °C, -50 °C, -70 °C). It was found that the strength was an acceptable level at temperatures below room temperature. But started decreasing above room temperature. The impact fracture energy decreased with decreasing test temperature below room temperature.
