Abstract
II ABSTRACT Automatic recognition of written language has practical significance, because of the importance of the printed documents in human communication. Characters are the basic structures of written language. The problem in character recognition is to assign the character image into its symbolic class. To solve this problem a Neural Network based printed character recognition system that is invariant to scaling, rotation and translation is introduced and simulated in this thesis. The input of the system is a combination of two structures, UNL Fourier Transform and Principal Component Analysis. The characters in our input data set are captured character images having different size, rotation and placement from each other. Different coded outputs were also tested to achieve the goal. Different network parameters are offered for the classification system. After the training phase, all these networks are tested and compared to determine the ones that perform best.
