Abstract
II ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to investigate failure load and failure mode in a carbon- epoxy composite plate of arbitrary fiber orientation with circular hole, which is subjected to a traction force by a rigid pin. The failure analysis is performed numerically and experimentally. A computer program is developed to calculate the failure load, the failure mode, and the propagation of failure of plate with different fiber orientation, different material properties and different geometries. In this program, first the stress distribution in the plate is calculated by the use of finite element method. Second, the failure criterion is tested. Hoffman and Hashin failure criteria are used in this failure analysis. In the case of failure, appropriate properties of the material are reduced. Finally, the load is increased. This procedure is continued until a point where excessive damage is reached. In this study, experimental results concerning damage progression and ultimate strength of the joint are obtained. The mechanical properties of the composite material are obtained from standard tests. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results. It is seen that a good agreement between experimental and numerical results. T.c YüKsra.öûRimM kuruls* MSK01fiANTASY©N BWMMMM
