Abstract
Ill ABSTRACT Attached growth (biofilm) processes have received considerable attention in last decade because of the increasing knowledge about the structure, morphology, and population dynamics of biofilms. Particularly, submerged biofilm processes offer greater biomass concentration in the reactor with corresponding higher specific removal rates that allow small reactor volumes, greater volumetric loading rates, increased process stability towards shock loadings, high resistance to starvation periods and toxic loads, independence of the system to the performance of secondary settling tank, short-term and simple start up and often ease of operation due to omitting a sludge recirculation line. The major objective of this thesis is to implement a new hybrid system to make different submerged biofilm processes operational conditions coexist in the same unit possible without their inherent drawbacks that limit their applications to achieve more efficient, effective, stable and economical treatment. Hybrid sequential batch biofilm reactor (HSBBR) is the new generic term used to describe this new technology which combines fluidized-bed and/or fixed-bed conditions with subsequent physical filtration in a single unit that is operated periodically in a fill and draw mode. HSBBR was experienced for the purpose of investigating the performance of the system and to determine the optimum operational parameters. A, pilot scale set-up was implemented in the laboratory with the principal components and various tests were carried out. In the conducted research, nitrogen and phosphorus matter removal performance of the HSBBR was evaluated by considering the effluent concentrations and theIV system w as d esigned toe omply with p ossible f uture t reatment 1 imitations s uch a s nutrient removal without any need of additional equipment. Throughout the experimental research, different operational conditions were maintained in the same unit, namely `fluidized-bed`, `fixed-bed`, and `downflow filtration`. The performance of the reactor with different organic loading conditions (i.e. `low`, `medium` and `high` loadings) was observed. Results indicated that hybrid operation of submerged biofilm processes gives very good performance in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus (nutrient) removal if the subsequent operational phases are properly selected. It is innovative and promising approach, and need further investigation. Keywords: Biofilm, Hybrid sequential batch biofilm reactor, nutrient removal, fluidized-bed, fixed-bed
