Abstract
Fourteen hot and twentyseven cold water samples were collected from the area. Eleventhermal deep wells by drilled MTA are located in the Balçova geothermal area.Hydrogeological properties of waters were investigated by using geochemical analyses resultsof selected water samples from the study area. Analyses results were evaluated by plotting onthe Piper, Schoeller, Wilcox and USA-Salinity diagrams. Hydrochemical facies type thewaters is generally sodium-bicarbonate-chlorine.Boron and arsenic values of the thermal waters in the study area are dangerous for drinkingand irrigation purposes. Boron values vary between 4,6 and 14,5 mg/l in thermal waters.Arsenic contents of the thermal waters in the area vary between 0,4 ppb and 418,6 ppb. Theseshow over the limit values. The thermal waters in the study area, with some exceptions, are oversaturated with respect tocalcite, aragonite, chalcedony, dolomite, and quartz. These show that carbonate minerals(calcite, aragonite and dolomite), and silica minerals most likely to be precipitated as scales ingeothermal wells. All of the thermal waters of the study area fall in to the field of immature waters inGiggenbach (1988) diagram, indicating that these waters have not attained equilibrium.Cation geothermometers give unreasonable results for this study. Some of them are lowerthan the measured surface temperatures or much higher than possible. Discarding theunreasonable results the rest of the geothermometry calculations yield reservoir temperaturesbetween 135 and 188 degree celcius. The temperatures obtained from silica geothermometersare more reasonable than those of the cation geothermometers.
