Abstract
Production of nanosize engineering materials and systems has become an importantR&D topic in recent years. It is expected that nanosize materials will have betterproperties than materials with conventional grain sizes. In this study, production ofnanosize deposits over metallic substrates was studied. For this purpose, a chemicalvapor deposition (CVD) unit was designed and tungsten oxide particles weredeposited over 304 stainless steel substrates. Effects of system parameters such as thenature of the gaseous species, applied voltage and deposition time on the structureand size of the oxide deposits were investigated. A scanning electron microscope(SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) detector and an xraydiffractometer (XRD) were used for physical and chemical characterization ofthe deposited layers. Under all experimental conditions, deposits formed hadsubmicron features. Among the system parameters, the amount of oxygen gas wasfound to have the greatest effect on the size and shape of the deposits. A reactiveevaporation model is proposed for the explanation of the experimental results.
