Abstract
Natural convection-driven phase change problem has particular importance in the design of a thermal energy storage system since it mainly governs the temperature distributions and also the solid/liquid interface growth within the system. The main goal of the current thesis is to develop an in-house solver to predict the natural convection inside a spherical capsule, which can be extended to simulate the phase change problems that involve natural convection. To achieve this goal, the main problem is divided into two parts. In the first part of the thesis, a numerical code is developed to simulate 2D heat conduction within the spherical annulus. The code is validated against the analytical solution for 1D steady heat conduction. A set of parametric analyses are conducted by defining a variable Nusselt number on the outer sphere wall under two different flow Re numbers and various types of fluids. In the second part, on the other hand, a 2D code is generated to solve natural convection between concentric spheres under both steady and transient conditions. To reveal the validity of the code, comparative results are obtained for the case of air. Local and average Nusselt variations seem to be consistent with the previous findings in the literature. Further studies are conducted to determine the variation of mean Nusselt number for water near its density maximum temperature. At last, the natural convection driven phase change problem is solved in commercial CFD code ANSYS-FLUENT. Comparative results are showed that the predicted results are in accordance with the experimental measurements in the literature.
