A critical analysis of three different translations of Jack London`s The Iron Heel within the framework of target-oriented theory

Abstract

ÖZET: Son yıllarda çeviribilim alanında önemli değişiklikler olmaktadır. Geçmişte üretilen kuramlar, sınırlı ve doğaları gereği kuralcıyken, son yıllarda üretilen kuramların kapsayıcı ve doğaları gereği betimleyici oldukları görülmektedir. Gideon Toury'nin erek odaklı yaklaşımı bütünleşmiş bir çerçeve içinde çeviri olgularının tümünü kapsamaya çalışan bir kuramdır. Toury, çeviribilimin birbiriyle etkileşim halinde olan üç alandan oluştuğunu düşünür; çeviri kuramı, betimleyici çeviribilim, uygulamalı çeviribilim. Bu kuramda önemli olan diğer bir nokta da çeviri edimini yönlendirdiği düşünülen normlardır. Çeviriyi inceleyen araştırmacının ya da eleştirmenin yapması gereken de çevirmenin normlarını yeniden oluşturmaktır. Böyle bir çalışmanın başlangıç noktasını da erek metin oluşturacaktır. Bu çalışmada amaç Toury'nin erek odaklı yaklaşımını temel alarak gerçekleştirilen bir çeviri eleştirisi örneği sunmaktır. Bu çalışma dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde Toury'nin kuramının şekillenmesine yol açan iki kuramcı ele alınacaktır. İkinci bölümde Toury'nin erek odaklı kuramı incelenecek ve kuramın, çeviri eleştirisine katkıda bulunabilecek önemli noktaları yansıtılacaktır. Kaynak metin ve yazar hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak çeviriyi inceleyen araştırmacı ya da çevirmen için çok önemli olduğu için üçüncü bölüm Demir Ökçe ve Jack London'a ayrılacaktır. Dördüncü bölümde de Demir Ökçe isimli romanın üç farklı çevirisi erek odaklı kuram çerçevesinde incelenecek, çevirmelerin normları ve çeviri stratejileri aydınlatılmaya çalışılacaktır.

ABSTRACT: There have been important changes in the field of Translation Studies in the recent years. Whereas the theories of the past were restricted and prescriptive by their nature, theories of today are more comprehensive and descriptive. Gideon Tory's target- oriented approach is a theory that strives to cover all the variables of translation event within an integrated framework. Toury claims that Translation Studies consist of three branches which are interrelated; Theoretical Branch, Descriptive Branch and Applied Branch. Another point that is important in this theory is the norms that are thought to direct the translation process. What a researcher or critic who studies a translation should do is to reconstruct the norms that are employed by the translator. The target text will constitute the starting point of such a study. In this study the aim is to present an example of translation criticism carried out within the framework of the Target-Oriented Theory. The study consists of four parts. In the first part the two theorists who paved the way for Toury's Target-Oriented Theory will be discussed. In the second part Toury's Target-Oriented Theory will be studied and especially the parts of the theory which can contribute to translation criticism will be taken up. As it is of utmost importance for the researcher who studies a translation or for a translator to be familiar with the source text and the writer, the third part is devoted to The Iron Heel and Jack London. In the fourth part three different translations of The Iron Heel are compared within the Target-Oriented Theory and translation norms and translation strategies of the translators will be revealed. VI
