Abstract
Iskender-nâme in prose by Hamzavi, known as the writer of Hamzaname in our literature, differs from the other İskender-names in respect to its form and content. Hamzavi wrote his İskender-name both in prose and verse. In verse Sections, he gave part the advice given for Iskender Shah. The subjects in those sections were usually about the mortality in the world, the use of being justice and kind, and the characteristic of being a good ruler. On the other hand proverbs were used to stress the meaning. Hamzavi used the same rhythm as Ahmedi, `failâtün-failâtün-failün`. In Iskender-nâme, prose sections were widely used. The wars by Iskender, his voyage to China and India, the unusual things he happened to see there, and his huntings were written in prose and a pure language was used. Hamzavi 's Iskender-nâme is quite different from the works of Ahmedi and other writers of Iskender-nâme both in form and plot. Supernatural elements dominates almost the whole work. Iskender-nâme in prose comes to an end with the attacts of Iskender against Oğuz. The nâme of the narrator is Itisam but I don't have much about him though I searched widely. Iskender-nâme, the subject matter of my study, had a great impartance in folk literature. The motifs in prose sections of the work were classified according to the method used in the book of `Motif Index of Folk Literature` by Stith Thomson. As a result of this classification I found out that many motifs were recorded under the title of F [supernaturalism] and D [magic]. This led me to the conclusion that work had some characteristics of tale. Besides, it made me happy for the sake of art to find out the first traces of public medicine and the first forms of some traditions still alive among people. For this reason, I claim that my study will shed light on any future study on this subject, because we can't ignore the importance of the first signs of traditions living among people to determine the culturel features of nations.
