Abstract
Aim: To investigate the effect of smart phone and tablet usage time on short term memory performance. Material and Method: Our study included 200 students who were selected on voluntary basis among the İbrahim Hakkı Science High School students, who agreed to participate in the study by reviewing the consent form. After providing a suitable environment to the students participating the study, they were taken the short-term memory test. Following this test, Usage time a day was learned by asking `How many hours a day do you use a smartphone or tablet?'' to all students who participated in the study, and recorded in standard form. Results: In our study, when short-term memory test scores of the students who were using smartphones and/or tablets in the specific time interval, and also the students who were not usingany smartphone and/or tablet, there was no statistically significant difference (p>0. 05).Conclusion: In our study, usage time of smartphone and/or tablet does not affect the short term memory performance. There were no significant differences among groups. Although this result isimportant, it is clear that further studies in large scale on this issue is needed.Key Words: Short-term memory, the brain, the hippocampus, tablet and phone usage, visual short-term memory.
