Abstract
This research covers stylistical and typological study of the Grave Steles and Votive Reliefs coming from the city of Miletupolis, located in ancient Mysia and its surroundings and of those mentioned in the museums records as coming from various places. But we believe that they also come from Miletupolis, which has been ignored and m a way overshadowed by Kyzdkos for long years, can be introduced. It can also be possible to form a chronology based especially on grave steles, which may help the chronology of the Hellenistic Age. In this way, previous studies along the same lines will also be supported. Most of the works covered in this study are protected in Bursa Museum of Archaelogy and a number of them are protected in museums abroad while some of them are missing. Miletupolis is located 5 km. to the north-west of Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti), on the new tzmir-Bursa highway. The city lies on a crossing of the roads reaching to important centers of ancient north-western Anatolia. In the first chapter of the study titled as stele types Grave Steles and Votive Reliefs have been studied together without any differentiation. These split into two main groups as single picture area steles and multistory steles. Multistory steles are of special importance as they are peculiar to the area. These steles are of eastern origin as regards to their forms. However, their transfer to the grave culture must be due to an interference from the west. In the second chapter, a sculpture chronology is formed by ordering so many grave steles among themselves, which has not been done so far in detail Tor Miletupolis. Starting about 300 B.C., the production of these reliefs ceased from the middle of the 3. Century B.C. to around B.C. 150's. Even Though it stops for a while in the first half of the 1. Century B.C., starting around middle of the 2. Century B.C., the second phase keeps on until the middle of 3. Century A.D., but the numbers ascillate from time to time. In the third chapter of the study under tke heading Figure Types, the figures on the reliefs were introduced one by one. Furthermore those figures whose iconography has not been done so far and these whose iconography has not been completed, are examined. In addition to the known types, the two new types, named as Melissa and Fausta, are introduced to the archaelogical society. In the fourth chapter, steles coming from Miletupolis were classified according to their styles and probable workshops were determined. Nine of the workshops spanning a long period were determined and to prevent any confusion these workshops are labeled with letters in alphabetical order. Finally, tables, schowing the results of the study together, are included to help those who will be interested in the study. All these are supported with a map, showing the borders of the city of Miletupolis and sites of the findings.
