Abstract
In today's world, information systems, which facilitate the work of users in many field and contribute to the decision making processes, are also used in control records, trainings and environment measurements in the field of occupational health and safety. However, it seems to be a gap in the literature regarding the application of usability testing methods used in the field of human-computer interaction to occupational health and safety studies (OHS). In this study, it is aimed to demonstrate the applicability of eye tracking devices in determining the effectiveness of occupational health and safety measures. In this context, 26 people working in two different institutions and forming the sample of the study were included in the study. Participants who were wearing eye tracking devices were asked to go to the exit. The participants are expected to behave as if there is fire when task is being carried out. The number of focuses and focus times for each participant towards fire equipment (panic button, fire hose, fire extinguisher) and caution signs were examined. The study composed of three different experiments. For the first two experiments, participants who are working in their own institution were asked to complete the task. In the third experiment, participants were asked to perform the same task in an institution they were not accustomed to. In order to support the results, 12 occupational health and safety specialists were asked their opinions via a semi-structured form. In conclusion, these findings imply that the risk analysis is not enough alone and more comprehensive analysis with information systems is required to determine the precautions to be taken as a result of the risk analysis. It is suggested that the method proposed in the study can also be employed in the context of other emergencies and disasters.
