Abstract
In this work, during the pyrolysis of Erzururn-A9kale lignitecoal in the temperature range 400 to 700oC, thermal decompositionof the pyrite in the coal has been investigated. Forthis purpose, the ground coal was pyrolysed in a tubularqiliITtzreactor heated by an electric tube furnace under nitrogen atmosphere. In the experiments, the parameters tested for theireffects were time, temperature and particle size. It was foundthat temperature and particle size were important parameters, and that, at 700°C, 95 % of pyrite in the coal decomposed. Asa result, up to 43 % of total sulphur was removed, and alsothe first 15 min of pyrolysis was the most effective time intervalin terms of sulphur removal.
