Abstract
SUMMARY This thesis j which is presented to Ankara University for the fulfillment, of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philo sophy, discusses within the framework of one introductory section and three main chapters a mesnevi named !îFutühit-x Süleyman!` (Conquests of Suleiman) by the XYI th century Persian poet Ismail, The section composed under the headline of `introduction` aims to give the reader general information about the nature of a `şehname`, an obsolete verse form which was most commonly employed by both Persian and Turkish poets in the past «.In this connection.the reader is infor med about the pioneer poets in this field and some assorted examples are provided through the listing of a group of 5lSuleyman-nime'ss (şeh- nâmes particularly v/ritten to glorify Sultan Süleyman and thus genarally referred so) from Persian, Turkish and Arab literature with brief expla natory notes» Proceeding henceforward, Chapter I, in which the biography of İsma il is exposed along larith the prevailing social, cultural and poli tical atmosphere of his era, studies the literary personality of the poet in the light of his complete works. Chapter II is entirely allocated to a detailed analysis of `Futühât-ı Süleyman! `.which constitutes the essential part of this thesis «The analytical approach is fulfilled by means of a series of criteria which are expected to reveal the content, origin, form, meter, rhyme j rhythm, diction, figures of speech and the number of couplets or ganizing the poem, The strucrural analysis thus being completed, the study then focuses on the literary and historical value of the poets. Chapter III is consisted of a full translation of `Futühât-ı Süleyman!` with headlines of the chapters in the translated text, a general index and the critiques mentioned above. `Futühât-ı Süleyman!`, composed of 2276 couplets, is written in the meter of Faülün/Faülün/Paülün-Faül.It should be noted that there exists some metric defects and some seemingly meaningless yet ineluc table practised metric arrangments throughout the poem. The reason for this kind of failures is that the poet showed more favour to the mean ing than to the metric perfection. As to the diction of the poem, we can say that İsmâ1!! used quite a clear language, free from ambiguitise and circumlocutions»IV There is no doubt that both Firdevsi-the great poet of the epic Persian poetry- and his masterpiece `Şehname` have stood for a model and been a source of inspiration for İsmâffiI`İsma il, just like many other Turkish poets did, derived a major part of the raw material of his !îFutühât-ı Süleyman!` from Şehname by Firdevsi and remanufac- tured it into his own- A final comment regarding the whole of this thesis could be based on three fundamental points: 1) it provides the firs Turkish version of the distinguished epic named î!Futûhât-x Süleyman!` by the XVI th century Persian poet îsmâ4il along with a critique» 2) it dwells particularly on the linguistic and stylistic nature of the named work, 3) It emphasizes the historical importance and value of it as a docu ment which sheds light on a certain period of the Ottoman history»
