Abstract
Kastamonu is an important city at north-west Anatolia. There is no certain information about city from Antique and Byzantium period. Howe ver it can be deemed that there was used as a military station in Byzantium period. City has been taken over by Turks at the end of 12th century. The oldest dated monument is Frenkşah Hamamı (Frenkşah Bath) which from second part of 13th century. There are very little monuments from same century. This condition also can mean for 14th century. The city has shown a real development during Principality of Isfen- diyaroğulları at 15th century. In this period, a collection of buildings of an institution has built at northern region of city, and an important trading center has been built in a square where named as Nasrullah Square today. Also it can be seen that the city was become larger across out of city-wall. The Ottoman sovereignty starts from second part of 15th century. In Ottomans period the city has become larger with a collection of buildings of an institution, mosques, medreses, caravansarais and baths which are built in that period and also a central building in the market is added to the commercial activities. The monumental constructions period of it has been stopped at 17th century and after a century it has started again at 18th century. The major material of Kastamonu buildings are stone and brick and wooden materials also can be seen. The dome and vault was preferred in cover systems. However there was some buildings with wooden ceiling and roof. Usually stone brick and wooden could be seen at the decoration. Also some decorations such as painted, pencil hand makings and wall pictures which comes from latest period can be seen. I believe that the city was covered with city walls in Middle Ages. The city has kept to this internal city wall character until 14th century and the constructions starts to build firstly at out of city walls at 14th century. None of those has reached to this time. However some of the304 buildings has built out of city walls resulting from personnal prefence of city staff s.I think that whether some constructions or city staffs' building has been effectual for to be larger city. Ottoman period has been effectual for to be taken today's formations by trade center of city. The monuments which has been built can be accepted as traditional products of Turkish architecture.
