Abstract
Lütf ullah Halımı, one of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror's teachers, was an accomplished scholar of the late XV. - early XVI. centuries. In the latter years of the XV. century Halımı produced an important Persian-Turkish dictionary which he titled Bahrü'l-Garâ'ib. In this masters thesis the section of Halîmî's Bahrü'l-Garâ'ib covering the letters `elif` and `bi` was read and has been given in transcription form. In the course of the study it was discovered that Halîmî's work was a key source for later Persian-Turkish dictionaries, and that especially in the XVI. century a number of dictionaries were produced that are little more than plagarised versions of Halîmî's Bahrü'l-Garâ'ib. Halîmî's dictionary also has proven to be rich in archaic Turkish words and a' valuable source of information concerning pre-Fifteenth-century Persian dictionaries. The thesis is comprised of an Introduction giving information on Halîmî's « life and on the significance of his Bahrü'l-Garâ'ib; a Study examining the orthography and phonetics of the manuscript used in the study; a Dictionary of archaic Turkish words and indexes of Grammer Terms and Proper Names; and a Bibliography. i /3i Kxsxxau Dokümantasyon Merkez
