Abstract
205 SUMMARY In order to comprehend the text correctively and to perceive the textual units altogether it is the most important characteristic for the text to have the units that are connected. Connectives are the textual units that provide the text with this character. Although a text can be connected without them, it can not be denied the importance of the connectives in making a text connected. Therefore, the studies on connectives are being held widespread in textological studies, especially under the light of the discoveries in semantics and pragmatics. So, in order to limit the content which is very large, in our study, the conjunctions, not all connectives, were searched. This study was held in accordance with the functional and synchronic method and as database spoken texts, which had been chosen among the television broadcasts on various dates, were used. The main goal of the study is to determine the pragmatical functions of the conjunctions, as a part of connectives, in the Turkish texts in accordance with the functions of language. Our secondary aim is to prove the fact that cohesive relations, which have being studied in semantic level, occur in pragmatic level in a real communicational context and so that the textual units that build these semantic relations, have functions in pragmatic level with such context. Accordingly, it is impossible to draw a clear distinction between semantic and pragmatic connectives. In chapter I, the terms which are essential for the discussion were peresented206 not only with their descriptions but also with their development and the discussions that have made on them. How far the discussions on the conjunctions expanded was determined and the theoretical basis was established. In chapter II, in accordance with the Halliday's oppinions on language functions, the pragmatic messages that operates appropriate for ideational, textual and interpersonal functions were designated for and they were classified according to their determined functions. In this chapter, the appereances, in Turkish texts, of the conjunctions that send messages to the receiver due to the functions of language were also examplified. Finally, our study makes it clear that in a language research, built on functional approach, the oppinions on language functions must be considered as fundamental. Accordingly, it is undoubted that the functions of the conjunctions in a text can be explained due to the functions of language.
