Abstract
m ABSTRACT Divan literature evolved in a society that valued art and literature although it was a military based one. Many sultans, vizier and top level goverment officials took great pleasure in producing poems, alongside their own professions. Over a period of more than six hundred years Divan literature had produced many valuable artists. The works of these artists have to be examined and given a form that can be understood today.There is a belief that Divan literature is very distant from real life and consists only of imaginary components.However this literature tells the soul, pleasures, cultures and moral values of our people. Over a long period the Divan Poets had used their poetry to express the emotions of people and reflect the characteristics of that period. It is for this reason that any interpretation of their work enlightens the true essence of that period.In order to change incorrect thoughts about our Divan literature great care has to be taken when presenting any work of that time.Figani was a XVLcentury poet and he played a great part in Divan Literature.In this thesis his Divançe is evaluated. During the preparation of this Thesis all couplets were indexed. The classification of the indexed catagories are as follows 1. Religion and Belief, 2. Society, 3. Humanity, 4.Habitat, 5. Colours and Angles.These main headings listed above are supported with subheadings. When preparing the evaluation the main example couplets are included in the evaluation text. Index is prepared in an alphabetical order. In front of the words in index not only the number of couplet. Which cover that word but also the numbers of related couplets are given. In the thesis the following abbreviations are used in front of the numbers K kaside, G gazel, T tahmis.The numbers following these abbreviations, represents the order of verse within the Divance and the number at the end indicates the order of couplet within the verse. In our introduction we have examined the life of the poet and how he views poems and poetry.Because some of these subjects are not directly connected to our thesis and deserves a more extensive investigation we have made it with reliable sources toIV complete this introduction, we have also icluded the use of famous idioms and phrases that were a big influence on the Divance. In the conlusion to our thesis we have included a bibliography containing sorces that we have used. We have included an index of our thesis which indicates the elements covered in our search. Divan literature is like an ocean that contains many precious pearls. Although we have taken great care to stay true to the facts and sources in our evaluation, we are also aware that to truly understand a period of literature that we must have a conscious understanding of the culture that existed at that time. I hope any shorfallings will be met with tolerence. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers Doç.
