Abstract
Boil-up oranı, tepsi-reboyler hacimleri, katalizör konsantrasyonu, tepsi verimliliği arttıkça dönüşüm artmaktadır. ABSTRACT Reactive Distillation is the way of accomplishing chemical reaction(s) and separation processes in the same distillation column. Low fixed investment and operating costs are major advantages. According to the type of the reactions, one can obtain higher conversion and product purity. A realistic simulation and design studies of reactive distillation columns can only be accomplished with a model taking into account the non-ideality of liquid and vapor phases. In this thesis, a reactive distillation column model has been developed, which uses the most reliable physico-thermochemical properties equations and data, and considers full details of the process. The esterification of acetic acid with ethanol has been chosen as an example and with this model, optimum process conditions has been investigated, to accomplish high conversion, product purity and recovery. Firstly, the influence of liquid phase activity model on the simulation results has been investigated and different results have been obtained with Uniquac, model two modified Unifac models and a semi- empiric model, especially at high conversions. This situation makes difficult the selection of a suitable activity model for design purpose. The effects of process parameters namely; reflux ratio, boil-up ratio, total number of plates, the feed locations of reactants and catalyst, plates and reboiler holdups, plate efficiency, catalyst concentration, the molar ratio acetic acid/ethanol, have been investigated by sensivity analysis. The results show that an optimum reflux ratio exist, which maximises the conversion. By increasing boil-up ratio, plates-reboiler holdups, catalyst concentration and plate efficiency, the conversion increases also. Total number of plates and feed locations of reactants are process parameters which must be considered together and a detailed analysis is required to determine their optimum values. It is seen that by taking the excess of one reactant the conversion is increased considerably. This parameter is investigated in detail at various process conditions. As a result, it is seen that ethyl acetate product can be recovered in distillate as water-ethanol-ethyl acatede azeotrope with a recovery ratio of 99.7% and a conversion of 95%. It is concluded that an economic optimization study is needed for the final selection of various column configurations which accomplish this result.
