Abstract
It has been suggested that oxidative stress is an important factor in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has been shown that an oxidant/antioxidant imbalance occurs in the distal air spaces of smokers and in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, a high dietary intake of the antioxidant vitamins has been informed to be related for a better lung function. However, the effect of supplementation of vitamin C and E on lung functions and the relationships between their plasma levels and lung volume, and capacity has not been investigated sufficiently in smokers yet. To overcome this issue, we tested the effect of antioxidant vitamin C and E on lung volume and capacities in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Metods: Vitamin C (1 5mg/kg/day) or E (5mg/kg/day) was supplemented for 45 days in smokers and healthy non-smokers. Lung volume and capacities were measured by spirometric tests and fasting venous blood samples were taken before and after vitamin supplementation. Results: FEV0.5, FEV1 and FEV1/FVC were increased although other spirometric data unchanged by supplementation of vitamin C or E in healty non-smokers. But spirometric parameters as measured SVC, ERV, IRV, FVC, MW, FEV0.05, FEV1, FEV3, FEV1/SVC, FEF25-75% and FEF75-85% changed significantly in vitamin C or E treated smokers. Conclusions: In the light of our observations, we concluded that supplementation of antioxidant vitamins slightly enhanced lung function in healthy non-smokers, but lung volume and capacities significantly increased that they were reduced in smokers. The results of this study indicate that failed lung function is reversible and can be improved significantly by treatment of healthy long term smokers with antioxidant vitamins.
