Abstract
IV ABSTRACT Masters Thesis THE GRAFTING OF VINYL MONOMERS TO MONOFILAMENT POLIC ETİLEN TEREPHTHALATED CPETD FIBERS Meral KARAKIŞLA Ankara University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Chemistry Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Emsal PULAT 1992, Page : 65 Jury : Prof. Dr. Emsal PULAT Prof. Dr. Celal TÜZÜN Prof. Dr. Nermin UYSAL In this study, the grafting of ethyl acrylate CEAD, styrene CStD, ethyl -acrylate CEA-StD mixture on pol yC ethyl ene terephthalateD CPETD fibers, using benzoyl peroxide as initiator, was investigated. The monof i lament CPETD fibers used in this study were O. 40 mm and O. 35 mm in diameter. Furthermore, the mechanical properties C tensile strength, elongation percentage!) and adhesion of grafted fibers to styrene butadiene rubber was investigated. In the grafting of EA, St and EA-St mixture, the increase in temperature caused the increase in graft yield. The maximum grafting yield was obtained at 70 C. The effect of, the swelling agents, the swelling time, monomer concentration and relaxation time in monomer, upon the graft yield was also investigated. When styrene was added to EA media the graft yield was found to increase. The densities of the fibers, grafted with EA and EA-St mixtures, were seen to decrease with the graft yield while their tensile strength and elongation percentage increased. The adhesion test of PET fibers grafted by EA-St mixture on SBR at 150 °C and under a pressure of lOO bar was investigated using styrene monomer but the development of the adhesion property was not observed KEY WORDS î Graft, graft copolymerization reaction, pol i C ethyl ene terephthalateD, ethyl acrylate, styrene, styrene butadiene rubber CSBRD.
