Abstract
The Denizli basin and its surrondings are placed on a region having high seismic activity. In the first half of 2000, the increasing seismic activity has been observed in the region. A temporary eartquake observation network, which is made up of 28 observation station across the region, has been established by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center, Earth and Marine Science Institute. Approximately, 630 micro-earthquakes were recorded between 3 and 29 September 2000.The determination of the 3-D seismic velocity distribution in upper crust of the region down to 15-20 km depth are subjected to this thesis. Existing micro-earthquake data set has been processed, and the tomographic inversion method is tested on this data set. The data set is processed and interpreted in several steps. First, high-quality data set is desirable and has been formed by several QC steps. After that the travel times of the phases were prepared in an appropriate format for tomographic inversion. Furthermore an acceptable model has been built, and tomographic inversion method has been applied with the suitable parameters. Finally, Vp and Vp/Vs models have been interpreted together with geologic and tectonic characteristics of the region. At the end of this application, P-wave velocities and Vp/Vs ratios belong to Denizli region down to 10 km depth from the surface have been obtained. Over and above the already known graben system of the region have been proven by the obtained velocities. Approximate depth of the graben is appointed to the 8 km. The corelation between the center of the recorded seismic activities and Vp, Vp/Vs anomalies has been proven by the obtained depth slices. P-wave velocities made possible to interpret the structural differences of the region, nonetheless Vp/Vs ratio made possible to interpret the physical properties of the rocks in this region. Fault system, fault zone and possible geotermal zones in the region are discussed together with the study findings.
