Abstract
Direct current resistivity and magnetoltelluric methods are commonly used geophysical methods for determining the resistivity distribution of the earth. In both of these methods, data are generally acquired along line and interpreted by 2D inversion algorithms. In data acquisition, the surface topography is usually not flat and the undulated topographic surfaces damage the measured data. These topographic effects must be incorporated into forward solutions to generate more accurate inverted models. In this study, incorporation of topography into two dimensional direct current resistivity and magnetotelluric forward solution is examined. Finite element numerical method is used for solving the elliptic type differential equations. The finite element modeling mesh is flexible and it can be distorted with respect to the surface topography. Any undulated surface topography can be simulated by using flexible finite element mesh. Also the topography effect was simulated by representing the air portion of the mesh. The modeling studies are clearly showed the physical effect of topography. In direct current resistivity method, apparent resistivities are calculated for dipole-dipole array, which provides better lateral resolutions and also Wenner-Schlumberger array, which is more suitable for resolving the resistivity changes with depth. In magnetotelluric method we used high frequencies, which are more sensitive to the topographic effects and examined them for both TE- and TM-modes.
